The grid

The Power Grid

The Power Grid is an intersecting grid of powerlines, substations, power plants, and equipment. There are 4 different sections of the grid: generation; transmission: main grid & subtransmission; distribution: primary, secondary, & services; substations. The grid is changing with all the new automation. At first there was no grid. There was a power plant, a transmission line, a substation, distribution feeders, load centers, & taps. When the power plant went offline, the entire system was down. Now when a power plant is offline, we simply close a switch to another plant.
